Eagles Cut Reed, Sign Eckel

The Eagles signed fullback Kyle Eckel and released safety J.R. Reed on Tuesday.

Reed has been hampered by injuries this season and in five games with limited playing time, he has three tackles. With Demps and DeSean handling returns there is really no need for JR anymore.

Eckel, a former Patriot, had 90 yards on 33 carries with two touchdowns in 12 games last season for New England. He also played on special teams and totaled 12 tackles.  He’s a true FB and could be a giant asset to super RB Brian Westbrook.

Twas the Night Before ….. Free Agency

My friend Steve said it best today:

YES! I may not be able to sleep tonight, it is better then Christmas eve. Come on Banner, Reid, Heckert, and Lurie, it is GO TIME!!

And so it is finally here.  One of the most exciting eve’s in the NFL off-season is upon us, the eve of Free Agency.  With an unusually high number of serious playmakers on the market this off-season, tomorrow should be a very interesting day, one that could shift the balance of power in the NFL.  Most notably last year’s powerhouse, the New England Patriots, have three of their premier players hitting Free Agency tonight at midnight; Donte Stallworth, Asante Samuel, and Randy Moss.

With all of the rumors swirling around the Nest at Broad and Pattison I am thoroughly excited to see what the Eagle Brass will do tomorrow.  Some of the rumors that I have heard over the past few days:

The free agent acquisition of CB Asante Samuel (some kid wrote this in the comments section).

The trade of Lito Sheppard to the Arizona Cardinals for Larry Fitzgerald (same source as Asante).

The free agent acquisition of DE Justin Smith.

The free agent acquisition of SS Gibril Wilson.

The free agent acquisition of WR Randy Moss.

The free agent acquisition of WR Javon Walker.

According to Anthony Gargano, the Cuz, who is filling in for Eskin today on 610 WIP (thank GOD) has said there is serious interest in Javon Walker now even though word is he cannot pass a physical (his agent however, says he can play).  The Cuz has also confirmed that the trade rumors between the Eagles and the Cardinals are simply that, rumors, and nothing more as the Arizona front office has squashed Fitzgerald trade speculation.

I just want the Eagles to make a huge acquisition tomorrow.  They need to show the league that they have the cahones and mean F_ _ _ _ _ _ business this year.

REPORT: Sheppard out? Asante and Fitzgerald In?

As the NFL free agent period opens this Friday, February 29th, we are already beginning to hear serious grumbles around the (215) that our Philadelphia Eagles could be very active.

The latest winds blowing around my sources, are that the Eagles will heavily pursue former Patriots CB Asante Samuel. Also if the Patriots fail to come to terms with a one Randal Moss, the Eagles will also be in the mix of teams vying for his services.

Lately we have all also heard about Lito Sheppard’s unpleasantries with Eagle brass and more specifically his contract. The Eagles are also apparently seriously trying to hammer out a trade, sending Sheppard to the Arizona Cardinals for WR Larry Fitzgerald. Now this could be contingent upon Asante sporting midnight green first, but we are not sure at the moment.

The Sheppard for Fitzgerald talks seems to make sense for both sides. One of the Cardinals glaring needs going into this off-season is secondary help, and Sheppard would be an instant fix to that problem.

More to come……..

Eags Deny Sheppard Trade Rumors

So almighty ESPN and the NFL Network both reported that Lito Sheppard, who hasn’t made it through a season healthy since the 2004 Super Bowl season, was given permission from the Eagles to seek a trade.3554.jpg

Last night the Eagles denied broadcast reports that Pro Bowl cornerback Lito Sheppard has been granted permission by the organization.

Sheppard told Comcast SportsNet he wasn’t aware of the story and thought it was a joke when first told about it.

The Eagles however, are believed to be targeting Asante Samuel, the Patriots’ Pro Bowl corner, who hits free agency in a couple weeks, and if they are able to sign Samuel, Sheppard hit the trading block.

Sheppard, only 26, is due $2 million in 2008, $3 million in 2009 and then $3.7 million and $4.25 million. He has a cap number of $2,731,720 this year and cap figures ranging up to $4,258,120 in 2011. Nate Clements’ six-year, $56 million deal with the 49ers that included $22 million guaranteed money — have redefined the marketplace for cornerbacks.
