The New York Mets are reportedly closing in on a three-year deal for free-agent reliever Francisco Rodriguez.
Sports Illustrated reported that the team has offered K-Rod a three-year deal. That’s a one-year increase over the two years and $24 million the team is said to have initially offered Rodriguez, who broke the Major League single-season saves record last season with 62.
New York Mets reliever Aaron Heilman, who had more than 20 starts for the club before moving to the bullpen in ’06, wants to get back into the starting rotation.
Heilman’s agent says, if that doesnt happen the pitcher would like to go somewhere where he can be a starter again.
The Daily News reported that Mets front-office personnel are divided about what to do with Heilman, with Jeff Wilpon, the team’s chief operating officer, in favor of keeping him. But a Mets team official told the Daily News on Wednesday that the Mets are maintaining their stance of keeping Heilman, 30, as a reliever, regardless of how many established starters they might have.

The 24 year old reliever told the Associated Press that a Dominican judge ordered him to remain behind bars Wednesday night out of concerns for his safety.
I am going to come out of this fine because my conscience is clear, and I’m not worried this will affect my career because I haven’t done anything.
Yea righttt buddy. You ran over two chicks then left them for dead. Oh and you didnt do anything about it for a week. You crushed them on Tuesday, September 30th and finally had a change of heart and turned yourself in a full week later on Tuesday, October 7th. Typical douchebag Met. I wonder if Dominican law operates under the ‘eye for an eye’ mentality and runs over his ass as punishment.

Then the Cubbies beat the New York Mets 9-6 in 10 innings, reducing the Phillies’ magic number for clinching their second straight division title to three. Three friggin’ wins, come on fellas.

Philadelphia leads New York by 1 1/2 games in the NL East. The magic number for clinching the division remains at four.
Casey Kotchman homered, Mike Hampton won for the first time in a month and the Atlanta Braves halted the streaking Phil’s playoff push with a 3-2 win over the Phillies on Tuesday night.

Joe Blanton (2-0) pitched five shaky innings to earn his first win since Aug. 2. Blanton allowed four runs and five hits in his 10th start since Philadelphia acquired him from Oakland. Blanton really scares me as we near the home stretch of the season. Every time I checked back to the Phils game (watching MNF, some fantasy ramifications on the line) he had given up more hits and more runs. He needs to get his ass in gear if he expects to pitch in the playoffs. After averaging 1 walk per 9 IP in the AL for his career, he is now averaging 4 walks per 9 IP in the NL, an easier pitchers league, explain that.
Mets News: Billy Wagner is out for the rest of this season and will likely miss all of 2009 too.

The NL East leading Mets salvaged the finale of the three-game series, giving them a two-game lead over the second place Phils.
I think we still all remember last September, when the Mets blew a seven-game cushion with 17 to play and lost the division crown to the Phillies. Plenty of time fellas, plenty of time.

The Mets seem to be hitting their stride at exactly the right moment. Well for them, not us. It’s making things very tough as every night when we look at the scoreboard theres a W next to the Mets. Come on you yahoos, start losing some games.
